How to Remove a Custom Domain

We see a number of questions by users in the Blogger Support Forums about how do they remove a Custom Domain that they had setup for their blog.

It's very easy to switch back to your old blogspot address.

Old Interface
If you are still using the Old Interface, log onto your blog and go to the Settings, Publishing page.

Then click on the Switch to blogspot.com link.

New Interface
In the New Interface you go to Settings, Basic and click the "X" next to the domain name to remove it.

I tried to do that, it said it's in use.  It won't let me change back.

I'm having the same problem as some others here. My domain is not listed on the Blog Address field anymore, and I can't find it anywhere. I keep being redirected... Does anyone know anything about it?

I'm not sure I understand how this custom domain thing works. I'm trying to make the ".com" domain for my wife's works' current web site and make that ".com" be their new Blogger web site's address. I went through the process and all I could get it to do was have the ".blogspot.com" domain redirect to their ".com" domain. Then the ".com" domain was redirecting to the "www.google.com" home page. I've been trying for hours to get everything back to normal so I can start over.

Am I misunderstand how this works? I want their official web sites' ".com" to be the domain for their new blogger web site instead of the old web site. I don't really need the ".blogspot.com" address to exist at all. I don't want old customers to think they typed something wrong and went to a fake web site when they type in the ".com" and suddenly see the ".blogspot.com" address in their address bar....

I am Having the same problem with www.kalancea.com . Did you find the solution? Would be very much appreciated from my side. It is completely illogical to me, in the blogger interface custom domain was removed and DNS as well. Still my domains directs me to google :-(

I found the solution for my case - The switchhost plugin of firefox was the culprit. Disabled it and everything went smoothly. Maybe this is also the case for you as you might have followed the same instructions as me for moving from blogger to wordpress.

Cheers
Michael

I purchased a custom domain through Google. It expired and someone else bought the name. Couldn't renew. It did not revert back to the original blogspot name, its using my name instead. Never registered my name. It won't let me delete the custom domain. And what happened to my original blogspot address? Says its "already taken" but is still redirected to the custom domain. Did the person who purchased my custom domain take my blogger address too? No one to talk to at Google. Of course.
www.massagetherapy411.com purchased domain
www.massagetherapy411.blogspot.com original blogger address
Blogger says my address is www.debbie.gundelach.blogspot.com huh?????

Hi Debbie Gundelach

You will need to report your issue in the Blogger Support Forum here

https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/blogger

reynalay said...

can you then add it to a different blog?

DarkUFO said...

Yes, once you have removed it from your current Blogspot address, you then follow the instructions for the new Blogspot address and associate your custom domain to it.

Christina Morld said...

New Blogger no longer provide custom domains. Read how to set up the custom domain in 30 just minutes, if that is the case http://www.morldtechgossips.com/2013/11/how-to-get-and-install-custom-domain_7.html

Thanks for sharing. I would love to go back to the basic blogspot address. One question tho - what happens to links, images, etc. which are built into the blog using the custom domain? Will I break lots of posts when I delete the custom domain?

DarkUFO said...

Hi @ChrisButterworth2012 Any links that are automatically generated by Blogger will revert back to the Blogspot versions. However, any links that you manually entered will need to be fixed.

Also, if anyone has linked to your site from their sites or have bookmarked any of you pages, those links/bookmarks will be broken also.

Chris Butterworth said...

That's sort of a bummer, but the end of the world. What about images - will they stay intact? or will they disappear from the blog? I have about 275 posts; I'm ok with some minor cleanup, but I'm not prepared to basically rebuild the entire site... thx.

DarkUFO said...

Images uploaded to Blogger will be fine as they are all hosted on Google Picasa and the URLs are independent from your blog
