Troubleshooting Comments for Blogger

One of the biggest issues we see on the Blogger Support Forum is that of comments not working.

This Troubleshooting guide will hopefully help you debug the issues and get your comments working.

The best option, as I wrote about previously, is to use a proper comments system like Disqus (See Article). However if you really want to use Blogger Comments then read on.

Comment Types
Blogger currently supports 3 Comments types.

Full - This loads a whole new Full Page which shows the comments.
Pop-up - This loads the comments in a Popup Window.
Embed - This loads the comments under the post article.

Each of these has it's advantages and disadvantages.

Full - This option imho has the best reliability of the 3 and requires less security levels on the PC/Browser to be configured.
Pop-up - The issue with this option is that if your user has a popup blocker, very often they won't get to see the comment form.
Embed - This looks the nicest and is probably the easiest to use but does require that users have modern browsers and that they have 3rd Party Cookies enabled in their browser.

Word Verification
Before Blogger introduced their automated Spam Detection, Blog Owners who faced spammers/trolls would turn on Word Verification to stop the Spam Robots from flooding their articles with junk comments/links.

However now that Blogger has Spam Detection it is highly advised that you turn this off.

Another reason to turn this off is that Word Verification will put your readers off from commentating as the the Word Verification can be difficult to read and hard to get right. Don't make things harder for your readers.

Cookies
Due to the complex nature of commenting, your users will need to make sure they have 3rd Party Cookies enabled. To check/set your 3rd Party Comments check this article here.

Moderation
Some blog owners prefer to Moderate their comments before they appear live on the site.

Make sure that you have an email address entered that you check to ensure that you are alerted whenever a new comment needs moderation. You readers will be put off from commentating if it takes a long time for their comment to appear.

Personally I turn Moderation off. I want my readers to interact with each other real-time without me having to moderate.

Check Spam Folder
As I mentioned earlier Blogger now has automated Spam Detection. It's not 100% full proof and some Spam comments still get through and some good comments get marked as Spam. Make sure you check the Spam section of your blog regularly to ensure that no good comments are being marked as Spam.

Make sure that you select any good comments and select the "Not Spam" button. This helps "train" the spam system to better detect good/spam comments.

Missing Comments Form
Sometimes we see on the Forums that users can't get their Comments Form to Display at all. Here are some things to check

1) Make sure you have enabled comments for your blog. This should be either Full, Popup or Embedd

2) If your comments form is not appearing, make sure you have enabled it on the actual post. Edit the Post which is missing the comments form and click the Post Options section and ensure that comments are enabled.

3) If you comments are still not appearing then it's very likely that you have an issue with your template.

One thing to try, but backup your blog template first, is to try resetting all your defaults. You do this from Template section and then click the Backup Option.

Once backed up. Click the Edit HTML Button from the Template screen.

Then click the Proceed button.

Then at the bottom of the screen click the Revert link.

Now this should fix nearly all issues with missing comments forms.

Summary
1) Use Disqus over the default Blogger comments if you can
2) Use Full Screen Comments to make it as easy as possible for your readers
3) Disable Word Verification
4) Check your Comments Settings.

I hope you have found this useful and if you have any questions please don't hesitate in asking in the comments below or by creating a Support Ticket in the Blogger Help Forums here.

Thanks for the article.  I still can't get my own comments to show up.  I try to comment on the actual blog page and they won't show up.  Can you help?  I did find many things in the article that were useful and I have followed what you said.  Thanks.

We have had a few comments but we are not getting all of the comments. I have heard this from friends. People are having problems leaving comments on my blog. They get the comment box. (I have it set to a pop up, with no word verification and no moderation). When they hit the submit button it is going to a screen that wants them to set up a blog. I also tried to respond to a comment left and this happened to me. Any ideas what is wrong?

It sounds like you have set your comments up so that only people with Google Accounts can comment. Check the settings to see who you have allowed to comment.

If that does not work ask the people who are having problems what browser and version they are using.
Kieran said…
Just a note: I think you have to switch to the old Blogger interface to even see the full page option. I couldn't find it in the new one.

Also, I prefer not to embed Disqus as it is just more spyware. (Blogger already has enough embedded spyware with Google +1 and Adsense.)
DarkUFO said…
Disqus is not Spyware, don't be silly. It's used by some of the largest sites on Internet.

Hello:

I turned off my comment. Would like comments back on all posts. Tried to use the revert widget templates to default and didn't work. I have 3rd Party Cookies enabled. Any trick to turn on all posts and show the "comments" on the post or do I need to go to each and every post and turn on comments.
DarkUFO said…
@google-7e0e40020bda26c679f73b78a8ad4213:disqus I think you'll need to go back and edit your posts and see if you have comments enabled on the Posts. If not you'll need to re-enable them on a per post basis

I never would have thought to check individual post settings! THANK YOU! This was driving me crazy, and since I'd recently changed my template I was SURE it was something in the coding. I don't know why, but the default setting for comments on my new posts had somehow shifted to "don't allow." Now I know to double check.
Darian Bemis said…
This didn't really solve my problem. There's no answer for why comments are randomly disappearing... or how to fix it

Do I absolutely have to use disqus to fix this problem? I've looked at disqus, and I don't see much of a problem with it, but this will be the third time I've changed something on my readers in the past few months and I don't want to change something if I don't have to

I just left a comment with no issue.

Normally when people have problems it's due to them not having 3rd Party Cookies enabled in their browsers.
Darian Bemis said…
Alright, I'll let them know.
Do you think the problem might be that they're commenting anonymously?
Darian Bemis said…
By the way, thanks for looking into this!
DarkUFO said…
I strongly suspect it's the 3rd Party Cookies. That's normally 99% of the issues.

I assume you check the Spam folder in your Blogger Comments Dashboard?
Darian Bemis said…
Alright. Again, I'll let them know (they don't comment on the blog regularly, so this is why the problem didn't come up until just now)

yeah, I checked. It was empty.
DarkUFO said…
Cool. If you get a lot of comments I would strongly suggest you have a look at Disqus. It's a seriously good commenting system.
Darian Bemis said…
Will do. Thanks again!
RSj07714 said…
If one of my readers enabled 3rd party cookies and previously was only able to see my background as the comment box, but now sees the comment box and still can't comment, what could be the problem at this point? This person is using the most updated version of IE. Thanks for any help you can offer.
DarkUFO said…
Do they get an error? What account type are they trying to comment as?
RSj07714 said…
Sorry, they don't get an error, they just get a plain white box, but are unable to get a cursor to comment. I am using the embedded type comment box.

I just left a comment using IE with no issue. I'm not sure what else to suggest. I would suspect it's a problem with their computer.

IE is a seriously awful browser. You should strongly suggest to your readers to use a proper browser like Chrome or Firefox.

I have, they refuse. * grumble* Thanks so much. I will show them this post as I have said IE sucks a million times!

Do these solutions apply to static pages on dynamic view? Our blog posts have normal comment boxes but our every attempt to add a comment box to a static page fails. We've tried every piece of advice we found so far including those on this page. We've tested with embed, full; we remove the CSS code and try; revert widget templates and so on. We haven't touched the HTML codes apart from the reverting. Any idea on what the problem is? We're desperate to get a solution.
DarkUFO said…
Static Pages do not currently support comments. It's a known bug
Iro T. said…
Thx, it's relieving to finally realize it's a known bug but it's also disappointing to hear. This messes up our plan because we do expect comment box showing on the static pages.

Would you please enlighten us if there's any other means to force putting some sort of comment box on them? Do adding some HTML codes there work? How about Facebook plugin tools?
DarkUFO said…
I've never really tried on Static Pages. I guess you could try to investigate a 3rd party tool such as Disqus but again, it's something I've never personally tried. We've never really had the need to have comments on static pages
Iro T. said…
We would try investigating that and hope to have some progress. Thx for the info so far.
DarkUFO said…
Good luck and keep us posted.
I now have comments - and I've lost all my Disqus ones...ahhh!!!!
Sylvia said…
There's no need to allow all 3rd party cookies, just allow plusone.google.com under Exceptions in the Privacy tab.

My current issue is with Blogger's dynamic view. I primarily use Firefox, and at first it worked appropriately. However, more times than not when I try to load it up, it fails to load comments and the comment form, as well as the sidebar on the main page. I tried it on IE and it loaded perfectly. But someone else using IE tried it, and it wouldn't load at all. Firefox also does not work for them. Chrome seems to be okay. Does this sound like an issue that the 3rd party cookies trick would be relevant for? I did add two pieces of CSS code and I'm not sure if that is causing any issue (one makes the sidebar stay visible at all times and the other adds a "read more" tag to the end of the post preview on the main page). keegzone.blogspot.com - thanks for any advice!
DarkUFO said…
@keeganlucas Yes, 3rd Party Cookies is the biggest cause of most issues. Also, people using Extensions/Addons in their browsers that block code from running like AdBlock etc is also another big cause.
Keegan Lucas said…
Great, thanks - I'll try the 3rd party cookie trick and see if that helps out. Appreciate the advice!

Hi there! I've been having a different issue and haven't been able to find help with it for months. When someone comments on my blog, the email notification I get sent always says that it was me that commented. When I go to the blog the correct names are there (I use Disqus) and on the blogger dashboard in the comments section it has people's correct names, but it's just annoying that my notifications never let me know who commented. So it's JUST with email notifications. Any ideas?
DarkUFO said…
What email notifications are you referring to? The ones coming from Disqus or the ones coming from Blogger?
fathima said…
The ones coming from Blogger when someone comments
DarkUFO said…
If you are using Disqus, you need to turn off the Blogger Notifications and just use the Disqus Notifications.

Hi,

I just started writing a blog and I can't get the comment box showing at the end of my post. It show's at the preview but once I publish the post, the box disappears. It also doesn't show the tags I've used or even a time when I have published the post.

I've done everything; enabled third party cookies, checked comment settings for each post and also done the resetting of defaults. Nothings works! I'm really frustrated with this.

Here's my blog's address, if there's something someone can think of to get this sorted.

Did everything you listed and yet, nothing. My settings were originally set to 'embedded' in Blogger, then changed to 'full page'; nada.

Maybe I can't personally see them on the live page since I'm the editor or I'm missing something?

I actually found my problem! Apparently I switched the comments off in an individual post's settings from 4 months ago. :/ So it cause all the later published posts not have a comment box. I had to go into each and every post, turn the comments on, then update it. LOL
