Adding Disqus to your Blogger Blog

One of the best parts of running a blog is interacting with your readers via the comments they leave. Unfortunately the default Blogger commenting system is very basic and does not provide many features that other systems have.

I migrated all my blogs over to Disqus and our users love it. We're getting around 5*times the number of comments than we did before and Spam comments is almost non-existent. It's very easy to install into blogger, has great Spam and Moderation options to ban spammers and IP addresses and allows for threaded conversations. It allows people to log in via Twitter, Facebook, Google, or just email/Username or Anonymous.. you choose.

A lot of the large blogs/sites around the internet are using Disqus to power their discussions.

It fully imports your existing comments as well as keeping them in sync should you ever want to remove Disqus.

And best of all it's totally free :)

You can see it in action on my blog here
http://www.spoilertv.com/2010/12/spoilertv-2010-awards-and-winners-are.html

You can visit the Disqus site here to see a detailed list of features
http://disqus.com/features/

This tutorial will take you through the process of adding Disqus to your site. It takes less than 5 minutes to do. We'll show you how to install, setup, import and sync your comments.

First we need to setup an account with Disqus. To do this goto www.disqus.com and click the Signup Button

You will then be asked to enter your blog details. Fill out the form and then press continue

Now click the Blogger option

Follow the instructions on the screen and then, when ready, click the "Add Site to Blogger"

You will now be prompted to Add the Disqus Widget to your site. Make sure in the dropdown list that you select the correct blog.

Click the Add Widget button and your template will be updated with a new Widget.

Now if your blog has comments already we will want to import those into Disqus. If your blog is new or does not have any comments then you can skip this step.

Click the Import link.

Now click the Import button.

You will then be asked to grant Disqus permission to Import your comments. Click the Grant button.

You will then be presented with a list of all your Blogs. Make sure you select the correct blog from the dropdown list and then press Import.

If all goes well you'll see a little confirmation message about the import. The import can take a while if you have a lot of comments but this will run in the background and you can continue the process.

Now we want to sync your comments with Blogger. This means that any new comments posted on Disqus will be synced back to Blogger so that if you ever decide to remove Disqus then all your comments will be preserved.

Click the Enable Sync Button

Now we need to once again grant Disqus access to keep your comments synced.

Once you click sync you will be prompted to select the Blog you want to sync. Make sure you select the correct blog.

If all goes well you will see the following message.

As part of that message we need to check that your Blogger Settings are setup correctly.

Goto www.blogger.com and goto your Settings and then Posts and Comments section

Make sure your comments settings are set to Anyone.

And that's it!

Now when you go to your Blog you should see the Disqus comments form under your post(s).

So enjoy your new comments system and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask in the comments below. Also feel free to have a play with Disqus in the comments below so you can see how it works.

hello - new to your blog and finding it very useful! Recently, I changed the template of my blog. I'd been using Disqus comments on the previous template and continue to use it on the new one. In the past three days, though, I've had lots of comments on the site, but two in particular are not showing up even though with one I've published it (the other was sent via accessing my site on a mobile phone and I think I know why it's not showing - still haven't figure out how to show it though).

I've removed word verfication, and I allow to comment without moderation. Any other issues between Blogger and Disqus I should be aware of? I haven't reset defaults as I'm using a pretty customized template.

Hi aelish

Glad you like the site.

I'm a but confused about your problem? Do you have Disqus installed or not? You mention "Word Verification" but that is not an option in Disqus.

Can you explain in detail what the issue is and what your blogs address is?

Most issues are due to not having Disqus and Blogger sync enabled.

Your best option is contact Disqus Support who are normally very helpful

I've seen a recent rise in the Disqus commenting platform among bloggers since it dis spells a lot of spammers from their blogs as opposed to the wordpress commenting system.

Disqus is nice although I am having problems with comment count showing up correctly. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it just shows 0 (or even random number). I did and re-did everything according to various blogs. Oh, and I use classic template with universal code. Blogger Layout templates had the same issue for me.
DarkUFO said…
Best bet is to drop Disqus support an email. they are normally very helpful

What is the bid difference between this two, coz I'm reading some blogs that they are switching back to blogger instead of using disqus.

Hi. I did every steps above already but my blog still doesn't show the disqus comment box. It only says that disqus is added to my page. This is my blog: icyvirgorox.blogspot.com Can you tell me what's wrong? Is it because I'm not using a blogger template? Thanks.

Thanks for the informative post. My main blog is running through Wordpress but I do occasionally post updates through my niche "blogger" blogs as well, so this came in handy!

Disqus is awesome, and I love that you have an entire page dedicated to showing users how to install it. That's what I use on my blog, and my readers really like how easy it is to use. I've recently startedblogging for money, and it's so important that I get a lot of traffic on my pages so that I can support myself. Disqus makes the most sense to use for commenting so that my blog is as user-friendly as possible.

Unfortunately, the widget didn't worked out. I did it manually and everything seems to work okay, except the import and synchronization. I requested once more the import and stuff, and I have to wait for a while. Hopefully, everything will be all right. Anyway, this is an excellent post that really helped in what it could in my particular situation. I loved how simple you kept the tutorial. It is easily understandable.

Keep up the good work. :)

I love disqus, but since the new edition came out, my followers who use IE9 can't comment. It loads the comment form then it disappears in seconds. I sent all the details to DIsqus several weeks ago. The dis respond by saying they's look into this. Nada so far. Any ideas?

Hello! after reading this post I'm very sold on the idea of making discus my comment platform. However, I already added the Facebook plugin (I hate it almost as much as I hate the blogger default comments).

The only thing is I'm not sure on how to remove the current Facebook plugin. Do you have an article on how to do that or know of someone who does? Thank you!
DarkUFO said…
Sorry I don't. Facebook comments are awful. Try the Facebook support forums

What do you see on the Posts and Comments section?
nailahbone said…
It looks like before, at the bottom of the post there is the comment section that incorrectly displays there are 4 comments instead of the 7 there are. When I click on "4 Comments" it opens up the comment section and displays all 7. The comments have the option of +1 or reply to a current post. At the very top there is also a box for you to write a stand alone comment, inside the box it says "add a comment as Nailah Bone". I am able to leave a comment in that box but the issue is that I can't reply to anyone. I can click on the "reply" button under their comments, it opens up a box and says on the side "you are replying as Nailah Bone". I can type in the box and once there is text in there I the "reply" button becomes clickable. I click it and then it gives me the message You are not allowed to comment on this post.
DarkUFO said…
No, the post and comments setting in your Blogger dashboard? That is a screenshot of your actual blog
nailahbone said…
Sorry bout that. Here's what the post and comments section looks like: It has the Post section that gives me the option to adjust "show at most", "post template", & "Showcase images with Lightbox" Under the Comments section it only has "Comment Location"
DarkUFO said…
Thanks. It looks like you have G+ Comments enabled in your blog. I would suggest turning off G+ Comments. Then once they are disabled, when you go back to the Posts and Comments section you will see the Comments section options.

Great post DarkUFO. I have been using Disqus for the last two years and I love it. I love being able to monitor the comments that are posting on my site.

What do you like the most about Disqus?
DarkUFO said…
Glad you like it :)

For me 2 things, 1 the ability to easily moderate and ban spammers, and 2) the ability to allow users to easily comment using a number of login id's.

Quick question: how to you get Disqus to show on the blog main page, below every post?
DarkUFO said…
Not sure what you mean? The comments box and comments are only shown when you view an individual article or post.
UnFrancaisaNY said…
Thanks for your very quick reply. Quite impressive.
What you just described is exactly the issue. Is there anyway to change that, so that Disqus comments, or at least the comments view count, are shown on the main page, as it is currently the case with Blogger's comment system? http://un-francais-a-new-york.blogspot.com/

Subject: Re: New comment posted on The Tech Zone - Blogger Hints and Tips: Adding Disqus to your Blogger Blog

You can't display the actual comment but the comment count should display automatically on the homepage if you installed in all correctly.

If you look at this site you will see the comment count on the homepage for each article

http://www.tech.spoilertv.com

I have also added it on this site
http://www.spoilertv.com

If after installing it on your site the comments counts are not visible on your homepage, I would recommend contacting Disqus Support.
